CMS Proposes Additional Medicare Reimbursement to Support U.S.-Manufactured PPE
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a proposed policy that could significantly strengthen domestic manufacturing of personal protective equipment (PPE) by helping hospitals offset the higher cost of purchasing qualifying U.S.-manufactured products.
The proposal recognizes that domestic manufacturing requires greater investment in labor, regulatory compliance, quality systems, and manufacturing infrastructure than imported alternatives.
CMS estimates that FDA- and AAMI-compliant U.S.-manufactured isolation gowns cost approximately $0.82 more per gown than imported products. The agency is evaluating whether hospitals should receive additional Medicare reimbursement to help offset this cost difference.
